Inaugural Rosemary Mason memorial award

At the recent McCrae presentation night John Mason (pictured, right) presented the inaugural Rosemary Mason memorial award.

John wanted to create an award in memory of his late wife, Rosemary, who had worked for many years in the tower at McCrae, on club youth activities and on the VYC Youth Development Committee. Rosemary became known as "the voice of McCare".

McCrae Wins Award for Training Centre

At the Yachting Victoria Awards on 18 June 2010, McCrae was awarded the title of "Yachting Australia Training Centre of the Year".  This is due in no small part to the enthusiasm and dedication of all the Instructors and Assistant Instructors who contributed in such a major way last season and gave the Training Centre such a great atmosphere.  Everyone who came down to training sessions at the Club was blown away by the activity, professionalism and friendliness of the place.

Thanks also go to Guy Bancroft for his example and drive and for past Principals Doug Lee, John Mason and John d'Helin who set the sailing school up so strongly in the first place.  Thanks and congratulations to you all.

Once again McCrae YC had the largest representation of any Club at the Awards night who cheered enthusiastically at the win.

Sailing on the Labour Day weekend

Did you sail  a championship or other regatta over the Labour Day weekend?  Let us know what, where & how you & the other McCrae sailors went.  I know the Taipan's, Pacers, Mossies & Tasers were all sailing championships.  What about the B14's, I14's, Sabres, Minnows, Opti's, PT's, Lasers etc?

We only need a few very simple comments.  Send info to Steven Floyd (  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or see him at the club on Saturday.

Taipans sailed Vic Championships at Altona;  Warwick Lyon finished 3rd - well done.  No sign of Saturday's storm fortunately.  A mix of weather from very light to a blow to finish off on Monday.  Results here.

Mozzie Vic Championships were at Chelsea YC.  Simon Clavin in his own words "finished 15th overall in great close racing with best performances an 11th and 12th where I beat some guys I'd never been able to catch before. 7 races completed between squalls and lightning. Sat arvo was interesting. First race shortened due to light winds, 2nd race shortened due to 30-40knots blowing in and a mad scramble to the beach"  Full results & report here

A-Class cats sailed at Western port YC.  Lots of reps from McCrae.  Glenn Ashby 1st, Dave Brewer 5th, Ben Deed 7th, Simon McKeon 15th, Graeme Harbour 16th, Michael Kopp 19th, Dave Loutit 20th, Steve Brayshaw 21st, Horst Kopp 30th...Who'd I miss?  Full results here

Tasers, it seems, sailed their Vic Chanpionships back in January,  Mike & Kim Paynter were 9th.  Results and report here.  They sailed the "Southern States Championship" over the March long weekend, but I haven't found any results yet.

Contenders sailed Vic Championships at Mornington YC on 13, 14 March.  McCrae YC sailor, Dan Kohlman came 2nd to Jono Neate (who is current world champion and 2009 australian champion). As for Jeff Owen (8th), gear failure bought a premature end to his titles.  Results here.

Pacer states were held at Beaumaris on the long weekend, 40 boat fleet with a massive 12 from McCrae!!  Racing abandoned Saturday with the huge storm including so much rain you couldnt see 50m ahead as we sailed in, 4 short on Sunday in lighter sw breeze with 2 on Monday in n/ne building to 20 kts.   McCrae highlights include: 1st overall- Simon Merritt & Jessica Vincent, 5th / 1st Juniors- Tom Vincent & Lachie Imeneo, 7th- Murray & Liam/Anna O'Brien, 9th / 2nd Juniors- Tully Hiscock & Ross Berryman.  Results

Laser states were held on the 20/21st March at Royal Geelong Yacht Club. 54 entries, a very solid 10 from McCrae. Racing in a very light and shifty first race before a more solid seabreeze on Saturday, followed by a 15-20+ knot westerly Sunday in sunshine and 3 very tough back to back races. McCrae excelled, winning 2 out of the 3 rig sizes, 5 in the top 10 in Radial and the top 2 in 4.7.  McCrae Highlights:
Radial:  1st Overall- Simon Merritt, 5th- Joey Randall, 6th- John Jagger, 8th- Joel van Weel, 9th- Mark Lincoln
4.7:  1st Overall/ 1st Youth- Lachie Imeneo, 2nd/2nd Youth- Tom Vincent

Paper Tigers sailed at Safety Beach; no results yet - can anyone help?
