Background
Since 1962 the McCrae Yacht Club has been conducting sailing education and training for its members. This started out with a cadet program conducted on Saturday mornings, then in 1971 we introduced an intense four day live in course during the Christmas holiday period, and in 1975 we started ladies training sessions. In 1982 the Australia Yachting Federation formalised sail training throughout Australia and McCrae Yacht Club was one of the first to be recognised as a registered "Approved Training Centre" to provide nationally recognised Sail Training Courses. McCrae Yacht Club is a registered Yachting Australia Training Centre and now conducts sail training at all levels.
In 2005, the Club purchased a new fleet of training dinghies and the expertise of the Sailing School was put towards the establishment of the "Sailing For Schools" program which now caters for both primary and secondary schools.
Since then, we have provided sailing for schools such as St Kevens College, Little Yarra Stiener School, Frankston High School, Rosebud Secondary School, Strathcona Girls Grammar and others. These activities have ranged from our half day introduction to sailing course through to a five day school sailing camp. We are flexible and look forward to discussing individual needs on a school by school basis.
Secondary Schools
The Club has a fleet of eight Pacer sailing dinghies which are well suited for secondary students and can cater for groups with up to 24 students on the water at one time. These boats are typically sailed with three students in a boat where they learn team work, reliance on each other and co-operation to manage the boat with out spending too much time in the water.Primary Schools
The club also has a fleet of 12 Opti Trainers that are very stable and ideal training boat for younger students. These craft are able to be sailed close inshore where we provide a sailing atmosphere that helps to make the students feel comfortable on the water and enhances the overall safety of the activity.
