Overview
Membership and Eligibility
All sailors (Youth and Adult) attending sail training should be members of McCrae Yacht Club. Non-members may attend, at no cost, Try Sailing sessions on Saturday mornings when Sailing School is in progress (by appointment only). Young sailors should have attained the age of 10 years. Younger sailors are accepted at the discretion of the Head Instructor. It is a requirement that all sailors be able to swim (see Safety).
Yachting Australia Training Centre
McCrae Yacht Club is a registered Yachting Australia Training Centre (YATC) and is accredited to offer both Sailing and Powerboat Courses.
The Training Centre offers a range of Sail Training Courses providing a learn to sail pathway for all ages from beginners to race coaching.
Other YA Courses are offered are various times throughout the year.
- Powerboat Training Courses
- Safety Boat Training Courses
- First Aid
- Assistant Instructor
- Instructor Courses
Yachting Australia (YA) Certificates (Statement of Attainment Certificates) provide students with 'pathways' to commercial and professional qualifications should they wish for a career in our sport. For instance YA Instructor qualifications are accepted by international sailing federations and the National Powerboat Course is accepted by Vic Roads for a Boat Operator Licence.
Safety
It is a fundamental requirement of our Club in all aspects of sailing activities. All sailors are required toregister ('Sign on') prior to sailing, and after leaving the water ('Sign-off'). This procedure applies prior to the start of sail training and at the end of the session. Club patrol boats are on duty at all times during on-water activities, under supervision of the Race Officer for the day. It is essential that all who attend sail training are adequate swimmers. Participants will be tested (200 metres swim in a buoyancy vest), and are required to show they are capable of clilmbing into a boat after capsize.
Sailboats
The choice of boat will depend on the age, skill and weight of the sailor. For young sailors (under 50kg), we recommend out standard training dinghy - the 'Minnow'. Adult sailors should consider purchasing either the Sabre dinghy (one person) or Pacer dinghy (two persons).
Club Sailboats
The Club owns 2 Minnows (one person), 12 Opti Trainers and 8 Pacers which are available for sailors who do not own their own boat. A boat-place is allocated to a sailor for the training days, and he/she and parents are responsible for helping prepare the training boats prior to the session and washing down and returning the boats to storage after the session.
Buoyancy Vests and Clothing
The wearing of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON THE WATER is strictlyenforced club rule. The Sailing School recommends:-
- Children under 12 years PFD Type 1 (AS1512). Persons 12 years and over - PFD Type 2. A limited number of these PFD's are available to youth sailors on loan for a session, upon request.
- Appropriate 'wet gear' (clothing for getting wet) suitable for the weather conditions should be worn. These are a wet suit - but initially a long sleeve shirt, old shorts and bathers for warm summer days with additional (old jumpers) and spray proof jacket for cooler days. In addition, wet boots or soft footwear and head gear are recommended .... and, of course sun-screen 15 or greater. Most sailors wear wet suits/wet boots as they provide warmth and protection from the sun and cold weather.
